Stan was born in Minneapolis in 1909. Losing his mother after only 4 days, he was raised by his aunt Ethel May and his maternal grandparents in Downing, Wisconsin. He spent an idyllic childhood on their dairy farm. At age 6, he went to school in Downing and spent just one day in first grade, one day in second grade, and then settled into the four room schoolhouse in Downing in third grade. He was a graduate of Downing High School, playing on every sports team, and was valedictorian of a class of 4. Stan went on to Pillsbury Military Academy in Owatonna, Minnesota where he learned to recite poetry and love chemistry, and where he won the senior class drill down on graduation day. He attended Illinois Institute of Technology (then Armour Tech) in Chicago, and graduated with a degree in chemical engineering. He was a member of Triangle fraternity. He ran track for Armour Tech. The baseball and tennis coaches wanted him but his late afternoon chemistry labs prevented him from attending practice, so he chose track because he could run alone. His senior year half mile record time lasted 20 years and also qualified him for the 1932 Olympic Trials in the same event as Jesse Owens.
During the depression he sold magazines, parked cars (including Al Capone’s), and worked in a chemistry lab. He joined Harry Holland and Son in 1933, working as a chemical salesman with great respect for his customers. He eventually led the company as its president and reluctantly retired 50 years later.
He married Hermine “Chick” Schurman, a teacher, in 1935 and enjoyed 62 years of marriage and fun. He and Chick moved to Clarendon Hills, IL in 1945 where he worked tirelessly including a turn at mayor, as the little town became a Chicago suburban community. Stan and Chick also lived in Chetek, WI in a lake home purchased in 1940 by Stan and his aunt. His grandchildren fondly remember his solo early morning boat rides with coffee to start his day, and his waterskiing after the age of 70! Chick and Stan always spent whole summers in Chetek, from just before ice out until all the leaves were raked in October, enjoying the extended family coming for vacations “at the lake.” Stan just enjoyed a great Sunday at the cottage.
Recently, Stan lived at Boutwell’s Landing, Oak Park Heights, MN where he was admired for his dedication to health and fitness and his cheerful disposition.
Stan was preceded in death by his wife, Chick, in 1997, and his brother Loren Lind, British Columbia, Canada.
