Arthur Buell Obituary

Arthur Glenn Buell, 89, died on November 13, 2015 in Oakdale, MN. Born and raised in western Pennsylvania, Art was the son of the late Arthur Buell and Margaret (Lute) Buell. He served stateside in the Army Air Corps from July 1944 to October 1945, attended Westminster College in New Wilmington, PA, and graduated from Penn State University with a degree in Engineering in 1950. Art was a Quality Control Engineer for 37 years with Allegheny Ludlum Steel Corporation (later Al Tech Specialty Steel) in Brackenridge, PA and Watervliet, NY. Art was married to Betty Lou Hammer for 40 years before her death in 1990. They raised three daughters in New Kensington, PA, and Loudonville, NY. After Betty’s death, Art married Sarah (Sally) Cheney Gallup, of Latham, NY. They were married for 23 years. Art was an active member of Westminster Presbyterian Church in Albany (serving as church administrator in retirement), the Albany Curling Club and the Shaker Road-Loudonville Volunteer Fire Department. He was a regular blood donor and served on the camp property committee of the Hudson Valley Girl Scout Council, and was also a member of LaMonte (Masonic) Lodge 568 in Derry, PA. In addition to his wife Sally, Art is survived by daughters Jean (Bill) Nichols, Carol Buell (Olivia Hicks), and Donna Buell (Martin Raths), grandchildren Michelle Nichols Waldrep, Gregory Nichols, Brian Nichols (Dawn), Nathan Raths, Helen Thi Hicks-Buell, and great grandson Ethan Nichols; and by Sally’s children David Gallup, John (Sue) Gallup, Sue (Randy) Filin, Judy (Pierre) Veillette, and grandchildren Michael Gallup, Samantha Gallup, Andrew Gallup, Cassidy Gallup, Christa Gallup, Daniel Veillette, and Jenna Veillette. He is also survived by his stepsister Peggy Ann Fornedley, sister-in-law Marilyn (Hammer) Kolterjahn, and nine nieces and nephews. Arthur was preceded in death by his parents and stepmother, wife Betty, sister Marion (and husband Francis) Smay and brother Robert (and wife Pauline) Buell, stepsister Mary Lou Shuster, and niece Cathy Smay. A Memorial Service will be held at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, December 1, 2015 at Westminster Presbyterian Church, in Albany, NY. Burial will be at Coles Cemetery in Derry, PA at a future date. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given in his name to Westminster Presbyterian Church or the Alzheimer’s Association (www.ALZ.org).
