Marilyn Gelhar Obituary

Marilyn was born June 29, 1928 in Stillwater to Genevieve and Merrill McGarry. She attended Stillwater High School graduating in 1946. She went on to earn her Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Minnesota. Marilyn married Bob Gelhar, also of Stillwater, in 1953. She began her teaching career at Edina High School. She then took a leave to raise her children, returning to teaching for Stillwater schools and eventually taught tenth grade English until retiring at the age of 69. Marilyn was awarded Stillwater District 834’s Teacher of the Year in 1981. Survived by her husband, Bob; daughters, Kate (Dennis) Belkey, Meg, Anne (Jim) O’Brien; grandchildren, Jeremy Ludowese, Dan and Alli O’Brien; nieces and a nephew. Nothing was more important to Marilyn than her faith, family and friends. She was an active member of St. Michael’s CCW for many years. She treasured time spent with family, especially at Christmas when the family home was open to one and all. Marilyn cherished her three grandchildren, taking pride in their ever changing lives and celebrating their accomplishments. She loved a good, competitive game of bridge, and was an inaugural member of the “infamous” MBC. Her friendships spanned generations and across the country. As her friend or student, she made sure you felt her kindness and generosity with a food delivery, a kind note, a consoling phone call, or a letter of recommendation. A special heartfelt recognition to the loving and caring staff at The Gables of Boutwells Landing and her hospice nurse, Bonnie-her angel of mercy. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. on Monday, October 30, 2017 at the Church of St. Michael, 611 S 3rd Street, Stillwater, MN 55082. Visitation will be from 2-4 p.m. on Sunday, October 29, 2017 at Simonet Funeral Home, 6429 Osgood Ave N., Stillwater, MN 55082 as well as one hour prior to the Mass in the church atrium. Memorials preferred to Lakeview Hospice.
