Mary McDonough Obituary

Mary Louise Horgan McDonough of Stillwater, Minnesota died on Saturday, May 14, 2016 in her 92nd year. Preceded in death by parents, Richard and Helen (Mealey) Horgan; brothers, William and Richard Horgan; husband, the Honorable Judge John T. McDonough; daughter Molly McDonough Stewart; son-in-law Paul McDowall; and granddaughter Erin McDonough Stewart. Survived by children, Brigid McDonough (Reid McLean), Maura (Kevin) Cope, Richard McDonough (Mimi Exon) and Maureen McDowall; grandchildren Rory, Shannon and Ryan Stewart, Luke Kjos, Shawn Cope and Miles and George McDowall. Mary was born on October 30, 1924 and raised in Minneapolis, Minnesota. She was a graduate of Holy Angels Academy (1942) and the College of St. Catherine’s (1946) where she majored in chemistry. Following graduation, she worked as a chemist at Twin Cities Laboratories and Testing. In 1948, while working on Hubert Humphrey’s first U.S. Senate campaign, she met her husband John who was running on the DFL ticket for lieutenant governor. They married in 1949 and lived in Washington D.C. for three years. While there, Mary worked as a legislative aide to then Congressman Eugene McCarthy and in the Social Action Department of the National Catholic Welfare Conference. She and John moved to Stillwater, Minnesota in 1953 where she raised her children and lived for the rest of her life. She was a devoted mother and grandmother and loved to play blackjack and bridge, follow current events and dine at the Harbor View on Lake Pepin. At the time of her death, she was looking forward to attending her 70th college reunion in June and the completion of the Stillwater Bridge whenever that will be. She will be missed. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, May 19, 2016, at the Church of Saint Michael, 611 South Third Street, Stillwater, MN. Visitation will be for one hour prior to the Mass at the church. Memorials are preferred to Saint Catherine’s University, 2004 Randolph Avenue, S12, St. Paul, MN 55105.
