Muriel Schiltgen Obituary

Muriel (Lux) Schiltgen, 77, passed away unexpectedly Thursday, January 5, 2017. Muriel Katherine Lux was born in St. Paul, Minnesota on June 19, 1939, to Bill and Muriel Lux. She grew up in Como Park and attended St. Andrew’s Grade School, followed by St. Joseph’s Academy, from which she graduated in 1957. She went on to work at Univac, and in 1960, was crowned St. Paul Winter Carnival Queen of the Snows. In 1965 she married Peter Schiltgen of Lake Elmo, MN. They made their home on the beautiful bluff of the St. Croix River. Muriel was a loving wife and mother of three daughters, Lisa Schiltgen of Falcon Heights, Julie Schiltgen of Eagan, and Molly Schiltgen of Lake Elmo, and grandmother of Elizabeth, Jeffrey and Andrew Ching. In 1980, she went back to college, earning her Associate Arts certificate from Lakeview Community College. She then attended the University of Wisconsin River Falls, where she studied English Literature and earned her Bachelor’s degree, after which she attended the University of Minnesota, earning her Master of Arts in English Literature. She completed all her course work and exams towards her PhD in the English Literature program at the University of Minnesota. During this time, she taught English at Anoka Ramsey Community College, and subsequently at Inver Hills Community College. She retired from teaching in 2004, and went on to fight a successful battle against breast cancer. She treasured her family, her friends and her swim group at the Courage Center in Stillwater. She was always game for a round of Scrabble, a round of golf, or a glass of wine. She loved watching sports, in particular Notre Dame or Vikings football, or attending a Twins or Saints baseball game. She loved to travel, and took many exciting vacations during her life. She loved the beauty of the St. Croix Valley, watching the birds and wildlife out her window (and feeding every squirrel in the neighborhood), and taking walks down to the end of her street. She always appreciated the kindnesses extended to her. Though she claimed to be shy, she was outgoing and friendly, loved trying new things and meeting new people. She had a lovely sense of humor, a beautiful smile, and made a point of making people feel welcome, and having a good time. Muriel was preceded in death by her parents, William and Muriel Lux, and her brother-in-law, Richard Mueller. She is survived by her husband, Peter, her daughters Lisa Schiltgen, Julie Schiltgen (Diane Thompson) and Molly Schiltgen (Brian Keck), her three grandchildren, Elizabeth, Jeffrey and Andrew Ching, her brother, Tom Lux (Carolyn Britton) and her sister Mary Mueller, and many nieces and nephews. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 am on Friday, January 13, 2017 at Guardian Angels Catholic Church, 8260 4th St. N., Oakdale, MN 55128.
