Carole Ann Bartkey, age 78 of Stillwater, passed away peacefully at her home surrounded by family on May 24, 2026. Born on December 30, 1947, in Hastings to Alfred and Marian Freiermuth, Carole grew up in St. Paul and graduated from North St. Paul High School. She went on to nursing school at Ancker/St. Paul-Ramsey Hospital and spent many rewarding years as a nurse at St. Joseph's Hospital in St. Paul.
Carole's life was beautifully woven with family love. She had two daughters, Denielle and Debra, from a previous marriage before marrying the love of her life Gary Bartkey on March 17, 1987, in Reno, Nevada. Their family resided in Stillwater and grew as they welcomed twins Bethany and Gary into the world. As the children grew, some of Carole's happiest memories were made on camping adventures in the family motorhome on trips to Lake Superior.
Known for her fierce independence and strong spirit, Carole was always the one to speak her mind. Her love for family extended to her beloved cats, and she found joy in activities like crossword puzzles, and reading Stephen King novels.
Carole will remain in the hearts of her husband of 39 years, Gary; children Denielle (Chuck) Hickman, Debra (Scott) Axtman, Bethany, and Gary; grandchildren Justin, Brenden, Steven, and Katelyn; siblings Jean (Daniel) Green, Marla Gust, James (Mary) Freiermuth, Brian (Shawn) Freiermuth, and Rory Freiermuth; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. She is preceded in death by her parents Alfred and Marian (Stark) Freiermuth.
In honoring Carole's wishes, there will be no formal services. Instead, we invite everyone to honor her memory by volunteering some time to a charity of their choice. If you would like to make a memorial contribution, you can do so to Sharing & Caring Hands.
Carole's spirit will forever remain in our hearts, and we encourage everyone to carry a little bit of her kindness and honesty into the world.
