Hermann Klaas Obituary

Hermann was a beloved husband, father, and grandfather. He was also a musician, a craftsman, a passionate jazz lover, a keen traveler, an automobile enthusiast, a proud union member, and a tireless gardener and a nature lover, most particularly of blue birds. Hermann displayed a remarkable enthusiasm and zest for life, a mischievous sense of humor, as well as a prodigious amount of energy and vigor throughout his long life.

One example of his energy and vigor is how he was able to, and enjoyed very much, hiking with his grandsons, Julian and Aidan, well into his 80's on their many trips together in Germany. And even at age 92, he was still able to regularly beat both of his 13-year-old twin granddaughters, Elsa and Freya, at table tennis, a sport he greatly enjoyed playing his entire life, most particularly so when he was able to relish the easy vanquishing of a decades-younger opponent. And he was still using his beloved John Deere 425 tractor to snow blow both his and his neighbor's driveways at the age of 92, as well as mow his own large yard at age 94.

Hermann's life was a life truly lived in full - there were few interests left unexplored by him, few connections with others unmade; in fact, to say he thoroughly enjoyed socializing with people from all backgrounds and ages throughout his life is an understatement. Towards the end of his life, he expressed to a family member that he had few regrets and was at peace with nearing the end of his life - a most precious gift, indeed. He seemed untroubled by the prospect of death and was able to embrace the inevitable impermanence of mortal life, a destination no doubt more easily arrived at following a life, like his, that was so well lived.

Hermann is survived by his wife, Hariet, sons Hermann Jr, Stephan, Georg, Michael, daughters-in-law Jocelyn, Kimberly, and Molly, grandchildren Aidan, Elsa, and Freya, his brother Franz-Josef, his nieces Barbara, Christina, and Stefanie, and he was preceded in death by his grandson Julian.
